What should you do after installing Ubuntu?

1. Install ZSH(+Oh my zsh) and guake terminal.

2. Install any cool theme

For desktop: Numix-cinnamon, Dark void,Loki

For icons: Numix-circle, Vibrancy colours

3. Configure vim ( only if you have any prior knowledge of vim text editor)

4. Install tmux(+tmux resurrect plugin)

5. Install Dropbox

6. Install Goldendict

These are just a few things you can do to make your new os more user friendly and desktop more attractive.

Nice looking desktop is not necessary though. The default one is decent(yeah..just decent) too.

PS: I am using linux mint. But you can easily do all these on ubuntu.
